Has anyone tried putting shredded paper around strawberries instead of the more usual straw?

I think it might get very wet and go mouldy.

Old gardeners on our site say the best thing to put around them is barley straw.  When it rots it produces peroxide (that's why it's used to clear ponds), which helps to prevent botrytis.
