courgette leaves
« on: May 03, 2010, 22:57 »
I grew some courgettes from seed, inside- in a warm room.  They got pretty big pretty quick and started getting a bit spindly and falling over. I thought maybe they were too warm and needed to go outside.  So i transplanted them into big pots (where they'll be kept), and have been putting them outside in the day and bringing them in at night to get them used to the cold a bit.  I'm worried because the round leaves that were the first to grow have gone yellow and crinkled on all three plants.  The other shaped leaves that grew later are all fine.  They seem a bit sturdier now though- a bit less top-heavy.

What have I done wrong?  What do I need to do?  I'm worried I'm killing them!

If it's just the seed leaves that have gone "funny" then it sounds like the courgettes are doing fine.    :)

Do the seed leaves (new term to add to my knowledge of gardening jargon) always go yellow then?  phew :-)

To be honest I can't remember if mine have ever gone yellow or not! But if the main leaves are fine I would have thought you would be OK. :D

Yep.... seed leaves are nothing to worry about (either way) if the plant's main leaves are growing healthily...  ;)

Are they getting enough light? If they are a bit floppy it sounds as if they might have gone a bit 'leggy'. It probably helps putting them outside during the day but make sure they don't get too cold.

Thanks for all the replies!  I think they're getting enough light- outside in the day and in the kitchen at night.  The rest of them seem to be pretty healthy, just those round leaves.

As I walked to my car without a coat this evening I thought to myself "brr, it's chilly... I wonder if my courgettes are warm enough?"  Oh dear!  :)
