Can I ask some advice on manure?
« on: May 05, 2010, 11:01 »
I have a bag of rotted farmyard manure (levingtons) ready to dig into my bean patch.  I am a little confused as to how much to dig in.

Everyone always says 'Dig it in well' and I know that it can scorch roots a bit if it is too concentrated.  But how much is too much.

We prepared the potato bed, and dug in two bags of manure (75ltr bags I think, or 60ltr)
into an area about 3x3 meters, but a few days later it seems like hardly anything.  When you look at the soil in gardeners world it looks like it is practically steaming with manure!

Can anyoone advise how much is right, or how much is not enough!

Bean area is about 1 meter by 3 meters, so one bag be ok?

It's fresh manure which can be a bit "hot" for plants; your Levingtons is rotted so will be OK.

Not the most economical way to buy manure of course, so you need to make the most of it.
I would dig a trench (or two trenches depending on whether you are having 1 or 2 rows) about a foot deep. put the manure in, mix into the underlying soil with a fork then replace the topsoil.

This concentrates the manure exactly where the plants are growing and at the depth most beneficial to beans, which will actually appreciate the moisture-retaining properties of the manure more than the food it contains.

Garden compost, or "spent" old general purpose compost would do nearly as good a job if you can get hold of some.  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Good advice thank you!

So do I do that when I plant the beans, or do it today as I am clearing the area ready for planting at the end of may.

Always a good idea to let the soil settle before planting so I suggest doing it now.  :)
