Rosemary from seed - so slow!
« on: April 26, 2010, 23:13 »
For some reason, I bought some rosemary seed (it was cheap, we use a hell of a lot, and i lost 3 bushes in the winter).  I've bought some backup plants, but they arent exactly cheap, so I had great hopes for my seeds.

They were sown late March, started showing around 10 days ago and dont seem to have done anything since - so slow to establish and grow!  Is this normal?  on a sunny south facing indoors windo ledge.

It is easy to take semi mature heel cuttings in July/August.

Quite useful article here which suggests your experience is not unusual. Also, do not overwater the seedlings; you may kill them with kindness!

I have always renewed my stock by cuttings as they seem to root pretty easily and you may find they overtake the ones you have grown from seed. (If you do try that, let us know which method "wins"!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I agree with the cuttings route, and have even rooted the sprigs you buy in supermarket polybox, quite successfully :)

Thanks - good article.  Yea, dunno why I bothered to be honest, but Ive started now so will see it through!  Cuttings from now on methinks.  I'll keep you posted on the seedlings - but they're still tiny ::)
