do you lay bedding on grass?
« on: April 24, 2010, 09:00 »
hi all

we have moved our chickens from the concrete platter to grass at the back of the garden due to the noise they were making. we had elephant grass in the hen house and on the floor of the pen, now we have moved them to the grass they seem to throw out a lot of the bedding in the run area! should we just leave them on grass and only put the bedding in the hen house?

many thanks

Usually yes, bedding only in henhouse - they will eat the grass and also scratch it up looking for insects/slugs etc.  They will also make holes for dust bathing etc.
It will depend on how big an area they are on/how many chooks you have as to whether or not the area of grass will survive, if it is only a small enclosed area you may end up needing to cover the run with bark chippings or similar.

We don't have grass in the run anymore, it got scratched up.  In fact, most of the time, we don't have anything but bare earth.  They love it, they dig and dust bath.  Only put chippings down is there are any really muddy bits when the rain blows in.
