We use Sinclairs 'Garlic Barrier'.  Apparentlly it makes the soil 'taste' nasty for the slugs and snails and also the plants 'take it up' and the aphids don't like the taste of the sap.  So one application does two jobs.  It is a bit on the expensive side, we retail it for £7.50 for 500g.

I have had a bit of success in a similar way recently,  putting mice off attacking my peas by spraying with a 2pint water spray with a few drops of mega hot chilli sauce in it. I think it may just mask the smell and fool them that way but I tasted the spray and it still blows your head off. I am planning on trying it to protect my french beans this year when I finally get them ready to plant out. Last year they got badly munched by the slugs but I am hopeing it has a similar effect to the Garlic Barrier mentioned. The sauce is about £5 a bottle but would dilute down to produce gallons. I have also read of people just boiling up garlic cloves and making their own spray this way. It would need reapplying after rain but once the plants are big enough then it has dones its job.

Half a grapefruit and two house bricks. Grapefruit to bring them in, house bricks to take them out!  ;)
