Seedlings in unheated greenhouse
« on: April 22, 2010, 10:50 »
Hi.
Not a regular poster, but I've found a lot of the info on here of great use over the last year.

My predicament - I haven't had the chance to spend much time on my garden/veg in the last 3-4 weeks (personal life caught up big time with me).  So things have been left to themselves a bit (apart from a friend helping with watering occasionally).

I'm just catching up with where everything has got to, and have a few issues-

1. I planted tomato seeds about 4 weeks ago - they started off indoors, but I was then away from home for 7-10 days, and they were out in an unheated mini-greenhouse.  They have been back in our conservatory for the last 7-10 days, but they don't seem to be growing much.  I am presuming overnight temperatures were too cold - I presume they will kick off again?  They look green (rather than blue), and are healthy - just look like they've "stopped".

2. I planted courgette & sweetcorn seeds about a week ago, and I (over-confidently), put them in the same outdoor mini-greenhouse.  While it's getting warm during the day - will they also "stop" due to overnight temperatures?  If I bring them in now, will they "start", and just be a week later than expected?

Mangetout & Broad beans are going great guns outside - so at least we'll have some greens!!

Thanks all
(Can't remember if I put my location in my details - if not, I'm in Reigate, Surrey)

the tomatoes may need potting on in fresh compost

The sweetcorn and courgette could be brought back indoors as really they shouldn't be sown yet  :)  It is still very cold at night and there was a hell of a frost this morning so these uninsulated structures don't afford much protection to delicate seedlings.

These cold night will certainly have slowed down growth but it will get going again soon with the warm weather predicted. The temp fluctuation in a small greenhouse will be more than in a larger one but don't worry - if you have any doubts about frost-sensitive plants like toms and sweetcorn, just bring them in overnight and put them out during the day. They may have been set back but if they look healthy, they will be ok.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
