Darn Butterfly's
« on: April 20, 2010, 11:35 »
Ok last year i had murder with the butterfly's getting at my cabbages, this year i want to put up some sort of netting, now i know they can lay the eggs though the net so you have to find away of keeping it up off the plants.

Any idea of an easy way of doing this? i am severly DIY challenged so im looking for an easy solution that doens't involve hammering nails into bits off wood because that will just end up in tears and frustration (think homer simson's BBQ)

snap some bamboo canes to a few ft long, put old coke bottles on top, push them into the ground an rest the netting on top. :D
Start at the beginning, and finish at the end!!

My spelling is rubbish, so far be it for me to correct anyone else, but it should be "debris" (I only mention it in case it makes a difference on an ebay search ...)

P.S. I've used stiff water pipe (i.e. rather than floppy hose) to make hoops. There are some pictures on my blog. But canes with bottles on should do a good job.

The holes in the net must be no bigger than 7mm wide to keep butterflys out. Much of the netting in garden centres is 10mm or 20mm which is ok to keep birds out.

heres my solution, very easy to make, even stands up to repeated pheasant attacks and keeps butteflys out too even though its 'crop and pond netting'

crop and pond netting was not enough to keep them off the year before last...I had to resort to squishing :(
I watched them fold their wings and get through that size netting :(
