Tomatoes
« on: April 15, 2010, 20:04 »
Hi i am trying again to grow tomatoes... we eat so many that i do keep perservering but every year i have been unable to successfully grow any - blight.  I have kept them in the kitchen and transplanted into huge green pots with canes supporting them and they look really well .  In the warm sun i have lovingly taken them outside and bought them back in at night.  Should i remain doing this or should i let them stay outside or stay inside.  I really would love them not to be blighted again this year..... can anyone give any advice?

Someone gave me this recipe to use on tomatos. I think you can water them with it every week or so when they're beginning to fruit, to prevent blight. I'll give it a try maybe.
2 and a half tsp veg oil
tbs baking soda
gallon water
I'm trying Thompson and Morgan Ferline F1 Hybrid which advertises itself as having good levels of blight tolerance. Good luck!
The less time you have, the more becomes available.

you can spray with bordeaux mixture, which is classed as organic, or dithane which is not.

The baking soda mix sounds like one commonly used against mildew on courgettes, cucumbers and pumpkins, never heard it used against blight though

Not outside yet!! not for another 3 or 4 weeks I'm thinking..
1st year at 'proper' veggie gardening with 2x 12ftx4ft raised beds. loads of patio containers, 2 chickens and 1 ferret.

thanks - they do seem happy in my kitchen at the moment so ill leave them there while they are thriving, and use the sprays when they go outside. They are going quite tall - my kitchen with all the plants is like attack of the triffids............

And remember when they do finally go out, that they need to get used to direct sunlight (harden off) so only 1/2 hour outside for the first few days, a bit longer each day progressively. Could take 2 weeks to acclimatize them.

Mine get sent off the windowsill and into unheated greenhouse at first opportunity. It has to be really cold before I put the heater on and generally they tend to thrive.

Blight is more likely to occur with outside tomatoes and it spreads so easily that I can only wish you luck
