Unharvested Garlic Growing again
« on: March 22, 2010, 14:44 »
I forgot to harvest some garlic last year, so it just stayed in the ground.
Its now growing like the clappers, with each orginaly clove now growing half a dozen bulbs.

Is any of this likely to be edible, will it all be tiny, what should I be expecting?
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

I would dig it out, split the cloves and replant seperately. I did this when I took over my plot and they produced a reasonable crop.

In our local supermarket they are selling bunches of baby garlic in the veggie section, they look like a big bunch of spring onions.

It might be worth cooking with one or two of them. I'm off to our local brico to get some bulbs that they're selling off half price to give this a go.

You either eat it as green garlic, good in stir fry and mash :).........or lift, devide and replant, as already suggested

I wonder if this is simply good use of a missed crop ?  :D  Last year I dug up a big clump that I forgot about the season before, put it on the lawn while I finished up, forgot about it and this year there's a huge clump of what I first thought was couch coming up in my lawn but now find it's that garlic  :D Now I really will have to dig it out, divide it, and will give it to my son who's just starting a veg garden.

One of the cooking channels have been going on about 'fresh garlic'  and its uses all week. Excuse my ignorance but is this not similar to what Carrotcake mentioned?

Fresh garlic usually, but not always depending on a person's take on it, refers to the actual garlic you take out of a fresh head. This opposed to dried garlic powder or chunks, pureed garlic with preservatives, pickled or smoked garlic, cooked garlic. Purists maintain that only fresh garlic is worth using in recipes, but not everyone has it on hand at all times.

I had the same issue with my garlic and found them sprouting when digging over the soil.  I just separated the cloves carefully and re-planted them properly.  They have since come up and hopefully they will be ok to harvest.
