Peas, mice and Dave's insanity sauce
« on: April 17, 2010, 19:24 »
Decided to try and grown some peas this year in my garden and sowed a load direct and also some backups in paper pots. I noticed those sown in the ground came up well but then over a couple of nights all disappeared. I was left with a row of small holes. I was a bit surprised because my previous experience when I grew them on the allotment was once they came up the mice left them alone. I then waited a week and put in a few of my paper pot peas that had reached a couple of inches. They all got snapped off overnight. I am unsure whether it is mice, birds or squirrels but am losing patience as they take the pea (so to speak).
Today I planted a few more of my paper pot peas but have mixed up some of my hot chilli sauce (Daves insanity sauce) with water and given them a good spraying. I hope it puts the "mice" off. Or at least leaves them with eyes watering. Anyone got any other ideas - next step fleece? I do have an even hotter sauce - Da Bomb - but worry what it will do to the flavour of the peas. I will let you know what happens in the morning!

my chickens would eat your mice
perhaps not such a good idea though as they would also enjoy the pea shoots as well  ;)
Staffies are softer than you think.

The old timers would always give the peas a roll around in a jam-jar with a drop of paraffin .
That should make Mr Mouse spit and splutter.

Ps i found some mice nests with dried chillies in them, they were pinching them from a macaw aviary and taking them home to eat.

I know mice dig up peas & bean seeds, but I'd guess it's pigeons or pheasants pulling up the shoots - I saw a pheasant on the site only last week working it's way along someone's lovingly planted row of peas only last week (ran towards it flapping my arms like the proverbial Birdman of Bognor Regis to scare it off). Heard they pull them all up as they've learnt that worms sometimes come up with them. Have you tried netting?

Well - I went to check this morning and whatever has been eating my peas has left those I sprayed with chilli sauce. They got their revenge though - I had sown a box of peas just to harvest pea tops and the little beggar had managed to get into this and dig them up!
