How much manure?
« on: April 22, 2010, 15:29 »
My wonderful husband has arranged a surprise for me- a farmer he buys organic pigs from has sorted out a supply of well-rotted manure for us, for the allotment! As much as I want! I have to go out next week and pick it up, but I donīt know how much to take, and I donīt want to rent a cart until I know how much I will need.

I have two plots, one approx. 10x10 meters and the other 10x5. The soil is well-drained, sandy, and very poor from years of cultivation (this is an old site). I grow every thing from sweetcorn to pumpkins to tomatoes to beans, including root crops, but I would mix compost into those beds.

Would a couple of tonnes do it? Or should I take three?

I would take as much as you can get your hands on.  It's amazing how much you need to cover a full plot.

And how much should fork in? Around 5 cm deep layer of it and mix it in? Or more? The soil is really very sandy.

Iīm so excited, I canīt believe I am so excited about poo

I wish I could send some to all of you, it is so kind of this farmer to say we can come and raid his manure heaps

Definitely take as much as you can get. Not only can you spread it on the plots, you can add it to the compost heaps to enrich the contents. And there's always next year when you can't get to the heaps early enough  ;)

On your sandy soil, 10 cm would be good so you can fork it in and build up some tilth to hold in moisture.
