The 3 sisters plan
« on: June 02, 2007, 00:09 »
Hi all again,

I've planted some sweetcorn straight into the ground today, and I'm hoping to plant beans as well and maybe squash or pumpkins or courgettes or cucumbers. The corn are grown 14 inches apart. How do I put the beans in, and how do I put the courgettes in? I also wondered if I could plant them all (only need 1 or 2 courgettes as my husband isn't keen on them but I like them. He's not keen on pumpkin or squash either but I love them, so will grow them. We all like cucumber).

Any advice at all will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Jac

Trying organic gardening. Hoping to stick to it.

Please try the Search button at the top of this page since I recall seeing earlier postings on this subject.  Fill in the search fields as described but do post again if you can't find the answers you need (or even if you just feel like posting again  :D )

Search for Keywords: three sisters
Choose Search for all terms
Display results as: Posts
Return first: all available characters of posts

And don't think that this reply kills the thread, there are always new members, new Q&A plus hands-on experiences to relate.

Thanks again David.

Just realised I've posted in the wrong folder too?

I'll try the search facility.

Ps: Note the signature editing, lol!

I have moved your thread to GYO.

My sweetcorn is 18 inches apart, and although I haven't planted my beans in amongst them, as the beans are taller than the corn, I have planted my one and only pumpkin in the middle of the sweetcorn, and at the moment, it looks very happy!!!

Welcome Jac ' n 'Al ! Interested in your 3 Sisters plot. I have some Butternut Squash plants and a vacant plot ready for them.

Can I interplant with climbing French Beans,  I have some left over .

But stuck on the corn plants, can I sow some seeds into the soil outside now or in pots or should I try to locate some plants from somewhere.

Can I try a 2 sisters plot and miss out the corn.

Has anyone any advice ?

Hey Grannieannie,

As I put my sweetcorn in, I gave an allowance of maybe a third not really making it, if that makes sense? Well, I'm hoping I don't lose more than a third....

When did you put yours in? It'd be nice to compare notes as the gardens progress. I've only just started though, so a good few weeks behind you. Do you think I should get the beans planted on a tray/pots to transplant later, or just wait? Ditto the squashes.......

Since finding this forum yesterday, I feel I don't have enough room on my plot  :( . London plots are so small, or maybe just ours? Only 11 paces wide and 23 paces long. Thinking of rejoining the waiting list for a second plot  :(. Too much to plant. lol!

Hello Corndolly! Nice screen name. Now, that's creativity........ Thanks for the welcome  :).

Well, I've only really started gardening and I'm loving the world of gardening. From what I've learnt about the 3 sisters, all three plants contribute in one way or another to the others. I suppose if your soil's well prepared you could do the squashes and beans, but in the absence of corn which supports the climbing bean stalks, you will have to provide alternative climbing suppotr for the beans. I'm using this website as a guide, but tweaking to suit me as I'd already planted the corn when I found this! http://www.imrisk.com/threesisters/threesisters.htm
