Can you grow seedless edible grapes in the UK?
« on: March 24, 2010, 14:11 »
Hi, my first post here, so please go easy on me ;-)

I have three vines at the moment and after replacing a fence recently, it got me thinking about growing a couple of vines up against it.

Me and of cource my kids are big fans of seedless grapes, so did wonder if its possible to grow them here in the uk, how do they cope with the frost and what varaties can anyone recomend?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

I have seedless grapes that are fine up to -35C, which I doubt the UK would ever get. However, grapes do need a lot of sun everyday, so if you're in an area that gets a lot of cloud and rainfall they might not do quite as well for you. Best to ask the garden centres what varieties they have and how those will cope in your area. No point going cheap at discount stores as the plant won't be hardy regardless of how much cold it will supposedly take. Whatever variety you get, remember that they're the very last plant to come out of dormancy.

I think you will be OK if you are living in the south of the UK where there are many commercial vineyards. I grow seedless grapes (flame) in Glasgow but they have to be in a greenhouse as it is not hot enough during the summer. Cold is not a problem in the UK.

They need to clock up the hours of sunlight, AND they need the warmth. North of watford is a bit too up north to really get any massive result. Ive a friend tried here in boston, they grew but it wasnt worth the effort.
