moulting and feather pecking
« on: March 22, 2010, 19:25 »
I have 2 bantams that started what I thought was a moult about 3 months ago. thye both have a bare patch on their behind. it covers about 50% of their back end. there doesn't seem to be any new feather growth. could they be pecking each others out?
also there was a little patch of blood on one of the bantams backs but after a long inspection I could not find any injury. they are both in good form, feed well and lay eggs every other day.
I have put anti peck spray on tonite - just in case.
has anyone got any thoughts. should I be worried or am I winding myself up.
help

Hi,  I have 6 chickens they have all lost feathers over the last 3 or 4 months, 2 of them have all their fetahers back now but the other 4 have exactly the same as yours, missing feathers on their back near the tail feathers.

All 4 have a bald patch there and 2 of them are missing feathers on their necks. I too have put pecking spray on them as I have seen them pecking each other but I think the feather loss is mostly down to the breed of chicken.  I read that some chickens can become almost featherless over autumn/winter and it is made worse by them pecking each other when they see a bald red patch (which hey are attracted to)

My chicken are all still laying and quite happy, they do look rather scruffy compared to a neighbour whose chickens have all their feathers but they are a different breed.

I wouldn't worry too much, just keep using the anti pecking spray and as they weather improves I think their feathers will too

P.s - also, apparently they peck each others feathers if they are bored, do you chickens have lots of room.   Mine have quite a large shed but we only let them roam free  3 or 4 weeks
