On a visit to Stroud farmers' market (fantastic by the way), I picked up 2 onion squash plants. Any advice? Do they need anything different to my butternuts?

Never grown them, but all squash seem to be greedy feeders, need loads of water etc, so treat em like your butternut and you probably won't go far wrong.
