Whopping eggs - 3 in a row
« on: March 21, 2010, 19:12 »
I am a little concerned about my Legbar who is laying huge eggs at the moment. She has layed 3 enormous eggs over as many days, her normal eggs are around 55 - 60g, these are 85 - 90g. I am concerned that they might be potential harmful to her if she keeps on laying such brutes. She is in fine fettle but was fussing about laying today, she was in and out the nest box, and it took her a while. She has no sign of ill effect, but is their anything I could do encourage the return to normal size? She is a young bird and has been laying for about 3-4 months, she has layed two whoppers in her early days.

There is nothing that you can do to stop her laying whoppers, but hopefully things will settle down soon.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Just make sure she's getting enough calcium so that the shells are good ... you don't want one breaking inside her  :)
two daughters, nine hens, two goldfish, three cats ...

Thanks - no egg from her today. She has hard shells and is often at the grit pots, so I'm not worried about that, I shall enjoy the double yolkers and hope she does get back to more modest sized eggs!
