shallots eaten
« on: March 25, 2010, 12:54 »
Hi, I,m Tom Arto from chepstow and have a large plot and am mostly successful at growing
most veg. This season, however'I have a problem with shallots. I,ve previously experienced birds pulling them out but some of the sets seem to be partially eaten.
Any ideas and solutions welcomed. Thanks

Hello Tom and welcome to the Forum :)

I'm moving your question to the Grow your Own section where you'll find more people who can help.

Sounds like you've got gourmet scavengers. Most likely mice eating them since there's little else for them at the moment. If you can get hold of a bit of poultry fencing, scrunch a length of it along your shallot row and push the sides into the soil. By the time the shallots poke through the top, you can remove the fencing as the mice will be after other food items and pigeons won't be interested either.
