Is it safe to transplant Asparagus??
« on: March 16, 2010, 18:45 »
Hi all, I grow my own veggys in the back of my  garden and this year I bought Asparragus because I really like them, but it wasnt until I got home that I realise that that they take 2  years to grow,  I live in a rent acomodation and I dont know if I'll be living in this house for another 2 years. So my quiestion is " IF I MOVE TO ANOTHER HOUSE IN 2 YEARS CAN I TRANSPLANT THE ASPARRAGUS TO MY NEW GARDEN???  WILL THEY SURVIVE???

Thank you very much I hope that soemone can help me with this :).

Asparagus has huge roots which you could not dig up without damaging and once moved would need a couple of years to settle down.

It would be far easier to buy  new plants.

Mary it will be nearer 5 years before they will be cropping fully. :D As Gillie says, they do not like transplanting.

Out of interest, which is likely to be better - transplanted established Asparagus or growth from new crowns? There looks to be some on a currently unoccupied plot beside mine which I've got my eye on  :)

If you are allowed to take, then go for it. Costing nothing it`s worth the gamble.
