Strawberry Varities
« on: March 12, 2010, 21:36 »
Evening All

Just wondered if you could share which variety of strawberry you've gone for.

In my inexperience last year I put some in a planter 2 x Cambridge Favourites really nice and 6 x ?? I cannot remember all I know is that they were horribly hard and tasted very bitter.  As they were in a planter I couldnt remember which two I needed to keep so I lost the lot.

I will shortly be ordering ready to plant in my allotment over the next couple of weeks so any advise on early/main and late croppers will be greatly appreciated as always.

Also sorry one last thing - plant through sheeting or no??

Thanks
Missy

I've had success with 2 everbearers, Flamenco and Mara de Bois. I got a few fruits as late as October!!! I find alot of strawberries produce huge watery tasteless fruit but these are good.
I don't use sheeting because of slugs. I just put deep straw round the plants when the fruit is starting to set.

DD is sending me some 'Incredible' runners this year, as he was pleased with them, so I'll recommend those

I like Hapil and Honeoye but all depends on your taste and soil. Straw is better than sheeting as long as you don't smother the crown.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
