Pretend I'm really thick..................

No really................. :)

So carrot root fly can suposedly only fly two feet high.
My plot is halfway up a hill..................! Can he get there? If so, how can he fly 300 feet in the air, or is it  two feet above the ground? My beds are raised one foot above the ground so he will be able to fly onto this, but once there, can he then fly two feet above that "gound" level? Should I erect a sign saying "This carrot bed is 303 feet above sea level and you are now feeling airsick"?

Don't be daft...they can't read! And if they could, they'd be too busy taking 2' high ungainly flight onto your bed to ravage your carrots.....a notice won't impress or deter them.
This of course is purely my own opinion and you know what gardeners are like....someone may be able to assure you that they CAN read..... ::)  ::) :D :D

and I've often thought...they might only be able to fly 1' off the ground but once they reach the bathtub/fleece wall/ whatever, can't they just walk upwards?

It's a myth that carrot fly don't fly above 2 feet.
Having grown carrots in 5ft tall barrels and tubes I still got them.

The main thing to consider if you are going to protect them with enviromesh is that the fly actually lays its eggs away from the carrot on the soil and then the resulting maggot crawls through the soil to find the root.

So give them a wide area of protection, not slap bang up against the crop.

Also, annoyingly carrot fly pupa can lay dormant in the soil over Winter and hatch into flies inside your protection so make sure you don't plant carrots in the same place year on year.

Depressing I know but that's my advice. :(

If you want to see me cry when I get carrot fly on my show carrots then have a look at my veg blog. :D
