Keeping onion sets?
« on: March 11, 2010, 13:18 »
Stupid question time being a newbie and all, just gone and bought my onion sets, whats the best way to keep them till the weather warms the soil up that little bit more? And will they still be ok to plant if they start to sprout tops? Many thanks.

The best way is to put them in a try pointing up shoulder to shoulder and fill them with some compost. It will give a headstart and you can plant them straightaway. I did this for my shallots and planted yesterday with beautiful roots unbeneath them
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

They will still be ok to plant if they sprout tops, some people do what prakash suggested but if you have only just bought them it might not be worth the bother of planting them up in trays unless you are planning on leaving it more than a few weeks to plant them outside. I am hoping to get mine planted outside within the next couple of weeks.
