Runner beans
« on: March 08, 2010, 21:51 »
Can runners be planted in semi-shade?
I can't grow them in the raised beds this year because they shade other beds, wherever I put them. I have a site in mind but it only gets the morning and a bit of evening sun.
Would be great to know as I'm planning a trench and need to start bunging in the kitchen waste etc.

ya it would be okay but you wouldn't get as big a harvest why don't you try the dwarf varieties they'd give you a better harvest in good conditions than the climbers would in less than ideal conditions :D

I grew some dwarf last year but I think they dried out a bit and didn't do too well.
Should I do a trench for them?

I think runner beans grow best in cooler positions, french beans or dwarf beans originate from I think Mexico- or down that way - and do best in a hot sunny spot.
