Use of sawdust and wood ash
« on: March 08, 2010, 15:25 »
Hi guys I have a wood burned and have cut up a number of seasoned logs mainly beech and sycamore. This leaves me with a pile of sawdust made by the chainsaw. Does this have any use on the allotment also ash from the fire all from burning wood can this waste be put to any use , compost or soil conditioner??
 Cheers
Austin

Wood ash: contains potash-I use it on  potatoes and onions.
Sawdust: Add to thre compost heap. I use about 50 bin bags of sawdust, mostly in the compost heap. Be aware of nitrogen starvation, but can be used on paths and as a mulch to inhibit weeds.  It has no nutritional value but when composted makes a very good bulking agent for the soil.

I've done the same as Ivor - compost and lining paths. It's really great for the latter if you have enough as eventually it composts itself.
