Please tell me what this is....

Hi All,I really hope someone here can help as at the moment im at the end of my teather.
I have 5 hens nearly a year old and lay 4 eggs a day at the moment. The problem i have started about 2 months ago first i noticed the feathers coming out around the rear end and the crop area.At fist i dismissed the red mite because of the weather being so cold and also no sighn of them at night etc.Anyways after a a while i decided it must be either mites or lice and decided to do a complete clean everything was stripped out and disinfected.everything was sprayed with total mite concentrate which also does lice.I also put total mite killer(in form of a powder) on the birds. This was two weeks ago and although i can see some of the birds feathers growing back today i had a bit of a shock. While clearing the girls out i can see on there perches what looks like grated pieces of quill as if something is munching on the base of the feathers please guys and gals tell me what this could be and how to tackle it.
Please help Lee

Does it look a bit 'dandruffy' - sort of white flakes?  If so, it is just the quill covers coming off as the new feathers grow through.  As they are about a year old they may just be doing a natural partial moult - nothing to worry about but you may like to give them a nutrient boost such as 'poultry spice' with their layer pellets.

Have you held a feather up to the light? Anything on it? If it is feather lice, then you should see something. The Red Mite powder will not always kill lice, you need something like Ivermectin - see the stickies and check old posts for 'lice'; and you'll get a good guide as to what to do. Remember to protect yourself when checking or treating. HTH

Ok, stop worrying, it dosent sound like mites of lice to me. It sounds like a very normal partial moult. Hens go through this, sometimes several times a year. If you look at the new feather quils coming through, they are surrounded by a little waxy sleeve/tube. When the girls preen themselves or the feathers grow this breaks or crumbles off leaving what looks like large dandruff flakes. Have a look at their new feathers, you can slide or break this covering off yourself without hurting them.Moulting can take it out of them a bit, so keep an eye on them, maybe pop some poultry spice in their food or life guard tonic in their water just to give them a bit of a boost.
If they have lice, chances are they would be crawling on you too, you should be able to see them or their eggs around the base of their feathers. If you did find them, you need ivermectin , or a lot of people on here use kitten strength frontline, although this hasnt been registered for poultry.Try googling moults in chickens and lice/mites. Also use the search engine on here, there have been some good posts with lots of experianced members giving fab advice.Good luck :)

Thank you all so much for your very helpfull replies.I wil certainly get some poultry spice and keep my eye on them.As for waxy tubes on closer inspection this is exactly what it is.
Thanks again Lee
