Said I would be back with more questions. One end of the run is right up against a brick wall and I noticed this morning that they are pecking at the bricks.  They are old bricks and some are crumbling.  Will this harm the hens or are they just finding their own supply of grit?  They do have a pot of grit in their run.

hiya , it could very well be that they are finding their own grit via the bricks but also they could be searching around for any little bugs that mite be hiding.

I agree with looby, just watch the wall dosent come tumbling down!

thats something i forgot about  but its given me an idea for when i build the extension on the run maybe i could build them a stone wall like u see around the fields that would be bugs galore

Something you get (with new brickwork rather than old) is 'salts' leaching to the surface. The local sparrows love to scrape the white powdery stuff off our garden wall and they appear to be thriving on it.

One of my dogs used to lick our archway which was bare brick
