Calling all celery experts!
« on: May 26, 2007, 12:04 »
We've had at least 11 million celery seedlings germinate and are about to try and grow them on a bit before planting them out.  Currently they are in module trays and about one and a half inches tall.  They are Suttons 'Loretta', a self blanching type.  We were advised to try the self blanching type first as we are newbies.

Does anyone have any tried and tested tips for celery growing?

Thanks :)

PS: We ate the first ripe strawberries from our inherited strawberry plants
last night,  only 3 of them, but they tasted wonderful.  That's our first crop from the plot and we are thrilled to bits!  There's plenty more strawbs to come too.

Me too, (not that I took up Lovage instead). Found it very stringy, took a long time to grow & little time between maturity & the first frosts.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

See

Mine are about 3 - 4" tall in cell trays and will go out in the next couple of days.

Putting some form of barrier around really does make a lot of difference.

if you have a damp patch on your plot then thats the place for it,when they say its self blanching, thats not true if you dont earth them up it will be as tuff as old boots,
i must disagree guys i find it one of the easiest things to grow, the main thing is to keep it well watered and whatever it says on the packet keep it earthed up
feed the soil not the plants
organicish
you learn gardening by making mistakes

I tried the self blanching type for the first time last year, and yes you're right, it is stringy, and also for some reason, I got loads and loads of sticks on each celery, but they were tiny and kept splitting, but that's probably because I didn't water them enough.  I'm just trying a few this year, as there were thousands of seeds in the packet!

Thanks folks!

I'll be putting the celery patch at the damp sheltered end of my brassica bed, with a barrier around 'em and earthing them up!

You people are really helpful :D

Awww, DiggerDave, I could well be joining you in the Celery Incompetence Corner later in the season, if none of the above works
