A client has a big veg plot that I look after, and he wants to be self sufficient in fruit and veg. Plus, I`m allowed to help myself.

I have at least 600 sets; plus I grow a few hundred from seed; and there's only 2 of us...365 days of the year and I use 1 or 2 a day - sometimes 3 if they are smaller and we have a decent sized lunch. That's 900. I do give lots to family and use loads for chutneys etc. You can never have too many onions....

May I put another view? In my experience extending the growing season for onion sets is unnecessary. I plant sets in good well prepared ground and the difference in size relates precisely to how much room I give each set. On a Sussex allotment they ripen in August - at the same time whatever the variety or spacing of summer onions. I have to crowd some in a bit because the ones I give more space tend to be a bit too big for easy  culinary use - there's often a half left over which tends to hang around the kitchen getting forgotten. So there is no value to me in artificially extending the season - I get one onion per set the size I want per season without the palaver.
The big dfference in price and treatment is between seeds and sets and if you are going to take time and trouble to look after onions in pots or trays at this time of year it's better to spend that space and effort on growing them from seed.

Me too, I use 2/3 onions on most days, garlic in plentiful supply aswell.
Then thinking about the summer bbq's with friends and family (onions in or on everything).
I'm dedicating space for about 300 this year from seed and sets but I so wish I had space for more.
Have just popped a few red barron sets in loo rolls today (experimenting) shall see the difference in august.
I'm banned for being obnoxious (not pompous as you might have thought)

What size pots or module do you plant these sets into ?

Do they each need a 3" pot, or will smaller do ?

You can stand them shoulder to shoulder in a seed tray. It's just while the roots get going.

Personally I stick them straight in the ground.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
