Witnessed a Dust Bath?!
« on: February 20, 2010, 17:32 »
Noticed one of the hens laid down...on her side in the corner of their run.  She laid like that for ages, then flapped a bit, head just on the floor...thought she was a goner.

Threw in some corn and she popped up and ate...she'd made a rather large, deep hole in the soil so I gather she was having a dust bath?

It is quite a funny thing to observe when you first see a hen dust bathing.  :)

With my garden how it is right now, my lot are enjoying MUD bathing.

Dust bathing hens are soooo funny, one of the reasons I got hens again, they are such good fun to watch when dust bathing, especially when they all pile in on top of each other. :D :D :D :D

I cleared the greenhouse and dug over the couple of beds in there, let the chucks out and within five minutes the mud was everywhere! I just got round to building them a proper one in their run with an old wheelbarrow, minus the wheel! I built a roof of plastic and filled it with muck, it's stayed dry for the week now so must be working and the hens love it!

Definately having a dust bath, and no doubt really enjoying herself.

Isn't it funny. :tongue2:

If you didn't know you'd think they were having a seizure and about to depart.
