I can see the headline now: "Late chitting replaces toilet rolls"

... sorry, I'll get my coat!

Seems a lot of bother....the folks that do the loo roll, paper pot, kind of thing tend to be further north Prakash. :)

I put my broad beans in paper rolls and they are doing fine, but the peas are going straight in the ground.

I've found that, being up north like, it's better to bring my peas on in pots or trays. We all do on our allotment site. It gives them a head start and stops the rodents eating them. As a result they go out that bit later when the ground that bit warmer.

The answer is - it all depends on you plot. Only experience will tell you what is best.

Hi all  very interesting comments posted there seems many who favor direct sowing :)  i have always started my peas off in pots in the greenhouse or tunnel then cold frame then on the plot had fair results last year with onward so its onward again this year my ground is a bit on the heavy side so i find this is the best method for me same with broad beans start them of in pots or modules cold frame plot i found with direct sowings after the mice had there pickings and other problems i had to ask myself if it was worth growing peas :nowink: so its pot growing for me :D

I planted some garlic today, only to find some peas that I had planted as 'spares'  no label..silly me :D

But the point is they had already split their casings and were showing the tiny little white vee...the start of a root.. and with no fleece cover or anything. They've only been in since the 18th. YAY spring is springing here anyway :D

La la la la.......I'm suddenly in a good mood ;)

I've just planted my peas today in fibre pots (kelvdon wonder).
Was warned by my dad about the mice and birds when they first come through, so i'm not taking the risk.
This is my first year so I'll see how I fair though.

As for broad beans, OH's told me she's never tried broad beans!!!!!!

I took the plunge and planted some peas in the ground today (quite deep though as an anti-mouse measure.  I'll plant more successionally so if these don't take it won't be the end of the world.  They were a wrinkled pea (Waverex).

Broad beans - have done some in root trainers/paper pots and have sown some direct.

It's all a bit of an experiment as it's my first year of growing on this sort of scale.
 :)
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

My first peas are just beginning to poke through, have put fleece on as frost is forcast for tonight, and leave on until the cold snap, that's forecast, is over :)
