chook with prolapse?
« on: February 15, 2010, 16:39 »
oh my!! despite all our efforts to keep our girls clean, well fed & looked after, poor Maggie (our magpie/silver sussex) laid a v.large egg today & i've just spotted she appears to have a prolapse.
So not being at all sure i've scoured these pages but failed to find out exactly what one looks like or the exact treatment.

Thus far we've - caught her (much to her disgust!) washed her rear end carefully (she does have a sizeable red lump extruding from her) & tried with some TCP on cottonwool pad to push the lump back in (both OH & self failed miserably as she started squeaking - we were afraid of hurting her) She's now in 'Cell Block H' in isolation - will cover this up over night to help keep her warm.

Is this 'one of those times we must bite the bullet' & prepare ourselves for her possible dispatch (as we believe this could be repeated) or should we 'wait & see' in hope she gets better?

I think some on here recommend pile cream to help the swelling go down, whilst using thattry to push it in (gently but firmly) then ideally keep her somewhere quite dark to help stop her laying whilst she recovers.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Many, many thanks TMG for your post referring me to the one i needed (perhaps Auntie or other Mod could put that on the stickies for ref as it does show good piccies for ref & excellent remedies etc of what to do,  pretty please Auntie??!!?)
Oh will get some Hemerhoid(?) cream in morning if no improvement and we'll keep her isolated for a few days & keep a watch on her.
In an attempt to stop 'Maggie' laying should we keep her in relative warmth & dark for a few days to give her best possible chance of recovery - she is after all 1 of OH 60th Birthday prezzies he had with the other 5 last june & we do intend giving her as much chance of recovery as possible (but with the size eggs she's been laying for last few weeks its not surprizing really this has happened)

Oh! can any of you tell me please, how hard do we need to push to get it back or is that not a good idea?  She did squeak when we tried it earlier today so  (wimps that we are) we stopped.

Oh little witch i feel for u!! Its a horrible thing and u do need to keep putting the prolapsed bits back in.  The vets advise to me was to keep putting it back in every time it pops out and hopefully in a few days it will stay in itself, and if not.....well then it prob wouldnt ever go back, as decay sets in and then it can become infected.  Horrible i know!! Will keep my fingers crossed for u.  i do have other pics of my little hen i could post of her prolapse but they arent very nice... :(
