Does this poo look ok ?
« on: February 09, 2010, 12:51 »
Does this poo look bad?? My EE hen started acting "funny" last night. I brought her inside, she spent the night in a dog crate in the spare bedroom. Her poo is very watery with these little green specks (and the normal white "stuff"). The specks are about the size, shape and color of caterpillar poo. The kind of caterpillars who eat fresh leaves in the spring.

Hi there

I see you've posted this picture on the BackYardChickens forum.  What have they advised you there ?

Please expand on "acting funny"

Looks like a type of rat poison. Is she free ranging?

She and two other hens are able to get out of the pen and roam around the yard, but I can't imagine where she would have come into contact with any sort of poison. We haven't used any pesticides/herbicides since we got the chickens (June 2009) and I've never purchased rat poison. She also hasn't left the chicken yard in about a week and I can't imagine someone purposefully poisoning my birds.

By "funny" I mean she's just not acting like herself. She's usually very talkative and will start talking as soon as she sees me. Last night when I went out to close up the chicken house for the night all 6 other chickens were on the roosts in the house and she was asleep on the ground part way under their house. When I picked her up she was rather unresponsive and groggy. I brought her inside and flipped her over to feel her belly (thinking possibly egg bound - she started laying on 1/24 and laid an egg a day through 1/30 when we got about 7 inches of snow, all four of our laying hens have had a drop off in production since the snow). She seems extremely scrawny. I've never really felt around her belly before, but she just seems to be all feathers and bones.

She spent last night in a dog crate in a spare bedroom. I gave her a stick to roost on, but she doesn't want to roost. She's just sleeping on the floor of the crate (with the white cotton sheet as bedding). I gave her water with "Poultry Nutri-Drench" and put a small bowl of feed in the crate before I left for work.

I haven't really gotten much response on BYC, I included my picture from that forum because it seemed easier to access than uploading the picture again here.  :) When I checked on the other chickens this morning I saw what appears to be worms in the poo of one of the other chickens (a Golden Seabright). I'm not 100% sure it's worms, but if it is could this cause the symptoms I'm seeing in this other chicken?

Have you treated them all for worms ?  It would be a very good idea as that is definitly worms.

When hens shed worms in their poo it means thay have quite a lot of them !

I'm not sure what you use in the States but in the UK we use flubenvet.

I haven't used a chemical wormer in quite a while since the one that's available locally says not to use it for poultry producing eggs for human consumption. But I guess I'll have to. I've been mixing food grade DE in with the chicken feed for about 3 months, apparently it doesn't work as well for worming as it claims to or they're not eating enough of it.

Could a worm infestation cause the symptoms I'm seeing with the EE hen? Or does it sound like she could possibly have something else going on?

I appreciate all the help by the way. I've very quickly become chicken crazy and hate to think I might lose any of them to illness....or anything else for that matter!

I'd keep poison in mind but a heavy worm burden can cause depression in eating and therefore not much solid poo being passed.  The poo in heavy worm infestation could be green.
