Sturon for long storage, Kelsae for some monsters to make it easier to cope with turning the tomato/courgette glut into frozen tomato base sauce.... if the onions weigh 2lbs plus then you just peel fewer onions.... Kelsaes don't store that well (generally all over by January) but they do improve flavourwise after about a month... the "hotnwess" goes from them and they become quite sweet..... makes excellent onion soup too.
I'd stick in a vote for Long Red Florence grown in clusters (5-6 seeds per module, plant them out at 8" stations), but you don't want a red..... they store OK too.

There is not much point in staggering planting onions - get them in and harvest when they are ready- most will keep in storage. If you put some in later they will just be smaller when they stop growing. You could plant some winter onions after your summer ones have cropped but it would leave you an empty bed in June/July  (ish) next year when the winter ones are ready -  you could maybe get something growing after them.

Cavolo Nero
The best thing to do with seed onions that flop over is to give them a haircut. Cut them off at about 2 inches.  If you leave them they will only get tangled with their neighbours and some will spoil..

This does them no harm and they stand up straight. Leaf 2 and 3 are much sturdier and usually stay upright until you plant them out.

I am sure that not everyone will agree with this. I do it and it works a treat.
