Home made compost- its alive!!
« on: February 17, 2010, 15:56 »
My home compost bin is delivering the goods. I had plenty out last year too, this mostly went on the plot but this year I want to use some at home to cut down the cost of shop bought stuff.

I removed a load from the bottom of the composter last weekend, the bin was full to bursting. What came out looks excellent. I filled half a dozen large-ish pots I use for outside plants and fruit. I considered using some for starting off seeds but didn’t in the end because of the amount of wildlife still in it.

Are there any dangers I should beware of when using home compost? I looked closely and could see lots of tiny white 'creatures', and what looks like eggs.

Should I avoid using this for seed trays etc? How do you use it?

Thanks.
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

Pics of what you have would be good but :

if you google slug eggs you will see pictures.  If they are what you have .... well you know the rest!
ditto cockchafer larvae!

On the other hand, little red worms are great news and you want to encourage those in your heap.

For me - I use my compost on the garden where the little birds and nature can deal with the nasties (I squash the slug eggs!) and use commercial sterilized compost for the seeds.  No doubt you can sterilize it yourself, but I never have, and don't know how to do it without killing the goodies too.

I agree. Spread the compost on your beds and use multipurpose or seed compost for your seed trays. Not very expensive and easier.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
