ground still heavy
« on: January 28, 2010, 16:57 »
took a trip to my plot today, pretty much the way i left it, few little weeds nothing major but the ground is still so heavy and wet. attempted to turn a bit over but ended up with more stuck on the fork than on the ground :)

My raised beds are fine but the rest of the garden seems to have been under ice, snow or water for weeks and you could wattle and daub with my clay soil!
I've got fruit and nut trees to plant asap so I'm going to TRY to dig wide deepish holes and fill them with some of the sandy loam I've got and plenty of rotted manure and compost (build it up a bit too) so the roots aren't sitting in claggy soil.
Do you think it will work?

Be careful, cos Monty Don reckoned that if you did this it just made the hole work like a soakaway and fill up with water each time it rained. perhaps you are better to just heel them in till the soil's a bit better?

I did think about that but Ken Muir (god of fruit trees) reckons a raised bed is ok. We've also just got a gadgetty doofah wotsit that digs out rows of plugs in the lawn (lawn????)about 4" deep for drainage. and we'll fill the holes with sand.
Guess what we're dong this w/e?

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
