Went to the Wilkos in Leek and got all the seeds/onion sets/seed potatoes...

and...

Gooseberry plants...

and...

a blooming fig tree!!!

OMG!!!

Any help appreciated on getting anything worth having out of the fig tree would be appreciated.

We're up in the currently frozen Peak District.  I bought it because some bloke (nice bloke) next to me in the aisle said he grew one and is up on the moors.  Recommended keeping it in a pot because they like to be restricted in their roots...

Think I've just wasted £4 but if anyone has any tips that might make my bad investment worth while they'd very much be appreciated.

Do you know what variety it is?  I think Brown Turkey is a hardy variety in the UK.

The person is right that you need to restrict the roots, either by growing it in a pot or by using slabs to line the planting hole.  You often find them grown up against a wall, for support and some shelter I guess.

There's something about the pruning, you'd need to check it out properly but I think at the end of the growing season there are some tiny buds that need to be left on but the half-size figs won't grow any further and should be removed - But Check This Out before believing me here!

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have also thought about it - for £4 its worth the risk - might see if my local Wilcos has any in.

I bought a fig last year (£2 from Aldi) as we had seen one growing up a wall in North Wales. It was huge (the one in Wales) and covered in fruit. My plant is only 6 inches tall so I may have a while to wait for fruit.
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!
