I have no doubt that there is a difference in price as to how far south you are!!
As in more expensive? I found my Light Sussex near Exeter ... £12. But there just don't seem to be as many breeders in this area as in, say, East Anglia  :mellow:
two daughters, nine hens, two goldfish, three cats ...

Warren, Black Rock and Light Sussex hybrids £6.50 each :)
They were £5.50 last year ::)
Have to travel up to Preston for them though.

Reading the question again "What is a reasonable price for a hybrid?"
I would say £12.00 would be a reasonable and fair price for a hybrid.
I understand the breeder should make a "decent" return for hatching and rearing the chicken, and the price I can buy mine for is probably too low, but I suppose you could probably buy a free range table bird for £6.50 so I am probably talking rubbish, and probably go to bed now.

Just to let you know, in Hants, average hybrid price is £20 +/- £5. Obviously we are far too affluent for this game. Longdown Dairy Farm in the New Forest is 50% cheaper than its nearest rivals, selling Warrens for £8. I have found a local free-range egg farm on Watership Down which offloads its 'ageing' 8-month-old birds every so often for pennies; apparently the next batch is due at the end of Jan but I've had no success contacting them yet. Plan C is to get my parents to import some chooks from Wales next time they come to visit. All sorts of birds available there for about £6.

Have a look on the omlet site. Go on to breeds, check out the ones you like, then see if there are any for sale  in your area ;)

Hey Neil! Have they really gone up that much since May? Could be a demand related price hike. I expect there are loads of people who have bought/thinking of buying down south. There aren't many farms and you don't want to travel too far for the chickens' sakes.

@dizzie - same prices on omlet  :(

@vietta - yep, I've trawled the net and all sorts of directories. I must have located every outlet in Hants and that really is the avge price. I think a kind word with a friendly farmer is going to be the best bet. Let me know if you find a bargain!
