pH for beans
« on: May 22, 2007, 18:00 »
 I am shocked
I have Runner Beans and French Dwarf Beans in the ground - both doing, well not too well by my standards (based on how fast the peas are growing) But I have been told to be patient and they will suddenly take off.
Well OK, but I have just found out  that the soil pH should be 7 for French and 5-6 for Runners :!:
So
Somebody is probably going to tell me I read too much; but This is our first year and i really want to get things right.
I brought the pH of the ptato bed down using sulpher and ferrous sulphate.
Should I do the same now for the runner beans :?: Or should I add that acid buffer to the water (the stuff I got for the ericasious bluberry bush)
Former biochemist, now experimenting and having fun. :-)

I'll do it.  Jim, you read too much.

Top dress with rotted manure if you want to acidify by a bit.

Hope you've not taken offence JT?  :D   Perhaps it is more relevant if you are growing to show??

I couldn't tell you the pH of any part of my garden.  I lime before brassicas and that's it.

I think your worry to much Jim, don't worry to much about Ph at the mo, it will only drive you up the wall   they are only given as an ideal, and mother nature has a habit of turning the Ph of your soil back to whatever it was before you started any way ! just bung em in, plenty of muck and water jobs a good un

I only grow french beans,I haven`t even sown outside yet, another week or  so for me with a few in the green house as insurance to fill any gaps.I an growing mine up a wigwam in the middle of the herb bed so who knows what the pH could be,not the beans at any rate. When the time is right your beans will grow, peas are always earlir but finish far sooner.
