Please Help with Duck Sexing
« on: December 29, 2009, 10:29 »
I have 2x 27 week old welsh harlequins which I was pretty sure were both females.
One is currently laying daily and the other looked like she was going to start to do the same.
The only difference between the 2 ducks is the the one which we think is laying is about 10-20 larger has a much plumper undercarridge and has a slightly greener beak.

Today my wife spotted the the smaller one mountin the larger one and biting her kneck, this went on for a short period of time and then roles almost seemed to swap with the larger duck standing on the back of the smaller one.

I have noticed the smaller duck squatting a bit recently but this seemed to happen with the larger on before she started to lay.

As i mentioned previously I may be wrong on which one is laying but I would be very supprised if it is not the larger of the two and she always loks like she is carrying an egg.

We were so sure we had females as the breeder sent us some pictures of the drakes from the same batch and the colouring was so much different to may too.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Darren

by 27 weeks they should have full adult plummage and being a decendant of the mallard boys will have a curled tail feather! and the girls dont. mounting can take place with both sexes my muscovies squat for me and each other yet sometimes i see them trying to mount the other ducks! they are both girls?? maybe its a dominance thing?
thinks her guardian angel`s gone on strike !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By 27 weeks a drake would have very different colouring to the girls so I wouldn't worry about that.
My girls often tread each other, don't know why and who treads whom seems to change about all the time so doesn't even seem to be about dominence. I gave up worrying about it as they all seem pretty happy. :D
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
