As others I want the "good" birds that eat caterpillars, bugs and the like to visit regularly yet want the "bad" birds who wreck my crops to stay away. A difficult balancing act, I have trees on the very edge of my plot so I have put up nesting boxes for bluetits etc, however the same trees make excellent vantage points for pidgeons, rooks and their friends. I also put up bird feeders and do not provide a bird table. Right now in Dec it matters little but come the spring...... maybe just maybe the bad guys won't visit because there is never anything for them. Here's hoping

I have the bird feeders in my garden quite close to the veg plot, due to the location of the tree that they hang on etc... and it attracts all the smaller varieties mentioned like Robins, Sparrows, Wagtails, Thrushes, Wrens, Tits (blue, great and coal :)) etc..... No problem with crop eating culprits like pigeons. :)

A big YES to feeders that attract small birds! I have fat/seed balls hanging from the branches of my fruit trees all through the winter (in tubs, not nets). They come down in the spring tho, as I want the birds to eat the creept crawlies then instead  :)

Can I say a big THANK YOU from all the birds for providing us with food during our bleakest period of the year. Many of us would died through both cold and hunger if it was not for you kind hearted people. Seed, fat, fruit, cake are all welcome. But please no bread. It just swells up in our tummies!!! Two more pleases. Do not use nets. Our tiny feet sometimes get caught and break-off. We are always looking for water. So fresh water everyday is so welcome. Helping us, we will ensure that we will help you by gobbling up those horrible bugs on your vegetables and flowers.
