Porridge oat query
« on: December 09, 2009, 10:26 »
Someone recommended porridge oats, but do I give it to them as oats or do I make it up as porridge?
Thank you :)

I tend to at least wet it down so the oats don't swell in the crop.

And you must use old fashioned rolled oats, not the instant stuff :)

I'm sure with this cold weather your girls would like some nice warm porridge of a morning :)

Lidl do 5oog for 39p.
I give them dry, scattered on the ground (tablespoon each) or mix them with pellets, any wholewheat bread scraps, any supplements WHEN  NECESSARY (cod-liver/olive oil, garlic powder, poultry spice, wormer, apple cider vinegar etc etc) add water and maybe a bit of milk and microwave for a couple of minutes. Stir well and see how they go for it!!! Experience has taught me to use a heavy based bowl otherwise it's everywhere. They also tend to put their feet in it! The quantity I do lasts 2/3 days.
I vary the mix....crushed mealworms, chopped up scraps, but I always use plenty of pellets. That way I know they're getting the right stuff for laying....and lay they do!

I make mine up into a porridge with water  :)
I only make it though when it is frosty or snowy.

Same here!  (made in the microwave) & it looks like they'll be needing it this weekend!

They love it............sometimes I mix in a spoonful of honey, if its really cold ;)

I make it as a porridge mash mix - I add a hanful oats, handful pellets or mash and warm water and a sprinkle of poultry spice on occassion. They love it, and that way I know they are getting all the nutrients from the pellets as well as the warming porridge  :)
