I'm pretty sure its a hybrid cross -  it was developed by these people

 http://www.legbarsofbroadway.co.uk

I don't think it necessarily breeds true, I had 3 eggs from them and all three chicks were different colours, sadly only one has survived.   It was my first time hatching any eggs and so I am in no way an expert and would not like to say how much variation in chicks there would be in a true breeding breed!!

You could ask the people at legbars of broadway, they are certainly pushing the 'breed' and so should give you an honest answer.

I thought it was a breed in its own right.  Our burford browns came from the same place.  The chap's name is Phillip Lee Wolfe and he's very friendly.  He'll be only too pleased to answer your query !  Tell him I sent you !

Well, someone will correct me if i'm wrong but i'm sure i've read somewhere that a legbar is a cross/hybrid of an 'araucana' which apparently is the only true 'blue' egg layer... unfortunately i can't remember what it is crossed with other than some crossings with 'maran' hens can result in eggs being anything from blue to khaki in colour.  Hope this helps somewhat.

yes it was started by breeding with araucana, and a bit of barred plymouth rock (for the auto sexing), but that was along time ago, and the cream legbar is now a recognised breed in its own right. The ctswold legbar is another breed that i think  is now recognised breed.

I too think that they are now a breed in their own right. I bought 2 chicks from a lady that breeds from them every spring. It would be unlikely that they would breed like this if they were hybrids. I get a lovely olive green egg from the hen who laid at about 19 weeks and has not missed a day yet. :)
