Help! Broody Hen on Perch
« on: November 25, 2009, 08:37 »
I hope someone can give me some advice.  I know this isn't life-threatening, but I am really frustrated.  Our Molly has gone broody again and so I took the bedding out of the nest box so her bottom would be cold.  She moved to the roosting bar - and hasn't moved for three days!  This morning I put the bedding back (gave up!) and plopped her on the nest.  I was worried about her feet holding onto the bar for long.  She immediately got off and went to the roosting bar again.  Can a hen die of broodiness?  Help, please!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Are you sure it's broodiness? If it is I would find someway of getting her outside everyday so that she can eat and drink
Staffies are softer than you think.

Molly went broody last summer and after six weeks of frustrations we finally gave in and let her hatch out some eggs.  She is acting exactly the same way, except now she thinks she should be broody on the roosting pole.  The other hens don't have a problem using the nests to sleep in occasionally.  We just cleaned it out and J fluided it all. So no bugs.  She's just daft, I think.  There's no way we can put the hens outside, as we leave for work in the dark and come back the same.  I guess we could chuck her out in the run in the morning and block the door into the hen house.  Our other hens use the other hen house for laying, so they would be all right.  I've been checking out sources for fertile eggs - again!

Well, I've just snuck home during break and let the hens out and Molly is in the nest box sitting on Tilly's freshly laid egg.  The plot thickens . . .

Well, it's sorted.  A friend of mine is taking Molly as she will have turkey eggs for her to sit on next year.  So relieved.  I know this woman will take good care of Molly.

My Eve goes broody every couple of months. She is a silkie-sussex cross though so to be expected! I think I've had 12 eggs from her in a year - she lays four then goes broody agin. However, come spring she may get some duck babies to bring up to keep her happy  :) She always just plonks herself in the nest box, but the other girls now lay in the duck house as they could never lay when she's there. Last time she sat for a week on fresh air the daft girlie!
