cleaning eggs
« on: December 02, 2009, 22:48 »
I have two hens in one of those off the ground coop and runs-in-one but they do have free range most of the day.
Since I had them, nearly a year,  they have mostly slept in the nesting boxes - I occasionally disturb them out late in the evening and they sleep on the perches but I would rather think of them warm and snuggled up in the nesting boxes. They also seem to lay mostly at night so with the poo in the nesting box I often get eggs with some soiling on them. The bedding is a mixture of wood shavings and chopped straw. I clean the poo out every morning when I collect the eggs.
What is the best way to clean the poo off the eggs if I am going to keep the eggs for a week or so?
Thanks

Do I need to clean them in a dry way to prevent contamination passing through the shell?
Thanks

Yes you shouldn't wash them for this very reason as the shells porous any pathegens on the surface will be transpported through to the interior where bacteria can rapidly multiply.  Standard advice is clean mechanically by wiping, and brushing any dried on.  Store in the fridge in a sealed poly bag to prevent contaminating other food and use within 4 days.  Discard any which are cracked.

This is asked regularly and there's bound to be a sticky on the topic which will give more info.  Also on recommended storage of eggs generally.
