UPTOWN CHICKS
« on: November 19, 2009, 14:48 »
:)  We're going "posh"  Having, thanks to you lovely people, solved the food issues, there are still one or two technical hitches.  All of which I am sure, were down to the housing though it's brand new and quite lovely.  I saw from a link on here, the Lenham 503.  This has obviously been designed by very experienced chookyers.. so many plus points.   :D It's the smallest in it's range but still more than big enough for my chunky chicks, and the internal corridor design which keeps feathery feet out of the pooh .. wow what an idea  !  Plenty of perch room, and total accessibility for cleaning out.  After shopping around on the net managed to get one at almost £200 less than the main source, including delivery so waiting with baited breath for the grand arrival of the new and improved bukkingham palace.  I think the scuffling indoors is likely to sort itself out more with a bit more elbow room .. and you can close the egg laying area off at night so that a certain chikky who has taken to sleeping in there, will have to perch like everyone else.  Sorted.  I'm very tempted to go the whole hog and get an auto pophole... I guess it isn't essential, but as the weather grows less clement, I wont be as eager to dash down the garden in my nightie to do the honours at 7am  :tongue2:

Spoilsport!!  :tongue2:  That's part of the fun of keeping chooks -   - why should the rest of us suffer ignominy in our pj's, wellies etc at unearthly hours - (sorry - turning green with envy)   Good luck with your new facilities (sh!! or everyone will want some & there goes ALL the fun of imagining the rest first thing in the morning looking as unkempt & toussled as me!!)

I want piccies!  How posh!  I have coop envy!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

:tongue2: the pj and welly combo may feature in a pic at sometime .. if only to reassure you all that I look far less glamorous than everybody else  :D
We decided against the auto pophole because of something the chap at the supplier said . . "so ok, your chickens are out, it gets dark, the pophole closes.... what if they're not already in ?  they'll be locked out of bed !   " I hadn't thought of that !
One of the main reasons I want the bigger set-up is I'm fed up wrestling the girls into their bed nightly ... there seems to be so little room in there.  They're the biggest chookers I've ever seen .. though those of you with Buff Orpies and the likes are probably grinning and thinkin "wish she could see MY girls   :tongue2:  "

So .. there'll be a certain amount of banging and hammering, sawing, swearing and grumbling tomorrow afternoon .. or probably sunday given the weather reports.  We've got to drive to Princes Risborough to pick the house up (because the original supplier we found said it was an old web page and asked for another hundred quid)

It IS a good looking house .. I'd move in if the girls would let me.  I dont THINK it has sat tv and a pool room ... but ...

I actually like the look of those fancy Eglu cubes . . There are some serious bits of kit out there, but actually if I were more practically inclined, and had the time and the tools, I wouldn't shell out on a fancy house.  I'd set to and build/convert my own.  The real cause for envy are the ingenious solutions some of you long=term chookyers have come up with to make your girlies comfy.  I'm impressed with YOU !

Re pop hole closer - worth it's weight in gold ::).

When we first got our ex batts, they didn't know what to do at bed time for a while, and got shut out.  And with the darker nights, they've been caught out a couple of times, but have now got used to shorter days.

You can adjust the light sensitivity of the shutter, so once you've got it set up in line with your chucks preferences and habits, it shouldn't be a problem, and just takes the worry out it all.  And its an absolute god send in summer because it opens hours before I get out of bed giving the girls a really long day.

Good luck with the new set up and the girls.
