leggy sprouts and cabbage
« on: May 12, 2007, 08:49 »
I planted up some sprouts and cabbage seeds a while back and they got leggy very quickly.

I discovered through reading here (thanks all!) that I needn't have put them in a warm propogator and that was most likely the cause of the problem. Anyhow, I thought that I would end up binning the lot and so I put the tray of them out on the patio and ignored them.

That was a few weeks ago and now the plants are looking much better - but - they have very long stems/stalks.

Can I bury the stems a bit like you can with tomatoes?  I have had success doing this with tomato plants as I understand they can develop roots on the stem, I tried the same with leggy butternuts and I think it probably rotted the stems and they died off with a few weeks.

Any advice greatly appreciated, we are allotmenteering later today if it doesn't rain! :D

That`s what I would do,the stems are tougher than the sqash and slightly less delicious to slugs.

Thanks  Annie and WG,

I have just returned from the allotment and my brussels and cabbages are in! I didn't realise how much space they need, I thought I would get a lot more in - but hey ho.

I'm off to Homebase to see if I can get some kind of mesh or fleece typ thing to keep the bugs off!

 :)
