Marking eggs - (no not out of 10)
« on: October 22, 2009, 13:12 »
I noticed from the "washing eggs" topic Roughlee suggested that eggs should be marked with the date which is what I do too, however I've always used a normal graphite pencil for this.  I've seen advice which suggests that you should use a grease pencil (whereever you can get one of these from?).  I was wondering if anyone has any concerns or advice on how to mark eggs safely.

I found when hatching that pencil came off, ok for storing eggs though. Never heard of a grease pencil?
I used a permanent marker for hatching eggs in the end, but it was one that claimed not to leak through the surface, it didn't .
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

Well beulah you should be using a Stabilo crayon pencil apparently!

"The black Stabilo Pencil Crayon (Grease Pencil) is nontoxic and writes on glass, plastic metal and any smooth surface. Wipes off with damp cloth. Used by Camera Assistants to place focus marks on lens barrels. Acid free and pH neutral."

Which I got from Googling grease pencil ;) Apparently they are also used for marking china (the crockery not the country )

greasse pencils are also known as china markers, so you might have more luck googling that.

I presume the theory is that the graphite pencil may abrade the surface and damage the bloom. A grease pencil would just slide across the surface. Maybe.
