Blackening comb
« on: October 19, 2009, 14:06 »
Hi folks,I,m getting concerned about Hen Solo.  OH and I have noticed over the last couple of days that her comb has a blackish bit on it and I think it spread.  Should I call the vet? Also both hens don't seem to be eating as much but they go to bed about 6.30 pm so aren't as active is this why?  Hen Solo sits around a lot - under the shrubs, in the dust box at the patio door while Laya is mostly on the move eating. Havn't been able to find anything in my books about the black comb. So advise would be great.  ThanksSusan x[/quote]

I think a photo might be useful, does it look dry and flaky or inflammed or scabby? Do you have chicken wire around your run or galvanised mesh? :)

Hi Foxy Thanks for getting back so quick.  Just went out to check her - and rubbed the black off.  We put a little vasiline on her comb at the weekends, as part of the dusting and cleaning routine. I read it helps keep the combs and wattles healthy so it seemed to have got dirty. But Laya's was ok and not getting black, so that puzzles me.  Solo's the weaker wee hen, but I   feel so silly! Her comb is nice and red after all. Thanks again.

Hi Nails, I'm forever worrying about one thing or another with my hens.  I'm going on holiday in a couple of days and have great neighbours looking after the girls but the guilts have set in so I'm probably a bit worse than usual. Hubby came home and after going straight out to check the hens came in saying oh Solo's comb is nice and red again! So panic over. Thanks for your posting.  Susan  x
