I'm really worried as one of my new hens (approx 28 weeks) doesn't seem at all well.  I first noticed a lump hanging between her legs (thinking the worst) but on inspection it turned out to be poo.  She doesn't roost yet so I guess she must have slept on a lump and picked it up like that.  Her comb is very pale but her eyes are bright and she is and eating and drinking.  We have put her in a small dog crate in the shed so she can dry off and feed on her own.    She seems very thin and her tail is down.   There doesn't seem anything obviously wrong any ideas what  I should  be looking for?

Things to check would be for mites. On her and/or others and/or coop.

Worms. Have you wormed them at all ? (flubenvet for 7 days)

Is she being picked on ?  Although you say she's eating/drinking well.

Could be lots of other things of course.

Thanks for the reply Rob.  No mites in the house last time I cleaned them out.  I will check her over properly tomorrow when it is light and she is dry.

I think she is the lowest in the pecking order and has been picked on although it does seem better than it was.  I haven't wormed them yet.

She has just done a very watery poo and looking at the pictures on The Chicken Keepers guide I wonder whether she simply hasn't been allowed to eat enough.  I hope she will perk up in the morning.
