Mulching is the putting down of a loose covering on exposed soil, mulches can be things like bark, straw, rotted compost or manure etc
they help prevent loss of water by evaporation, help prevent weed growth, in winter they can provide frost protection for delicate plant crowns, to name but a few uses and mulches.

As above but if mulching to preserve water do make sure the soil is wet before you put it on.
